Close… but probably no cigar 🙁
Lake effect RAIN… and a lot of it again today especially across Central NY in the Syracuse area, Utica/Rome area, Mohawk Valley and points to the south of the Thruway between Utica and Rochester today. Temperatures are in the 40s and the lakes are still in the 60s so it’s lake effect RAIN, not snow 🙁
Any chances of seeing any flakes today will be in the Adirondacks, where it is in the 30s as of this writing. If any snow falls today, it will be light, it will be brief and will stay mainly in grassy areas of the Adirondacks today, the only place cold enough for it to snow. Best chance of seeing anything may be a light frosting or dusting in the hills and mountains above the towns, above 2000 to 3000 feet.
This lake effect will continue on and off throughout the day, starting to taper off later this afternoon and especially tonight. The sun will come out tomorrow! Expect a decent day Tuesday with partly to mostly sunny skies and temperatures getting back into the 50s with lower elevation areas approaching the 60s.
It’s looking like the next chance for potential snowflakes will be next Sunday 10/24, and next Monday 10/25, with the best chances along and north of Interstate 90. I wish I had more news for you on the snow, but just remember the time of year we are in. We are just weeks from the point we could be talking full on winter conditions. It has happened in many Novembers, most recently in 2018 where the first weekend of November and beyond we got hit with early season snows and it lasted all the way through the winter. The last two winters have not been as cold or as long.
But each winter is different. In talking with good friend Bill Kardas last week, all of the statistical analysis of winters over the last 30-50 years say… nothing. It’s about the same no matter how you slice it. No real edge on the winter yet. We’ll keep looking. Two weeks from today is our first look, Four weeks from today is our first call, December 1 is our final call for winter 2021-22.
