Game over. For now. But we will be back riding before too long. Seriously. We will.
The warmth for today, tonight and through the first half of tomorrow will melt off most of what is left of the snowpack in the lower elevations. If not all of it. We are talking brown ground type stuff. In the higher elevations, where the lake effect was heavy over much of late November and December, where some areas got up to 100″ of lake effect snow, even here, it will at least be worn down to brown on most of the trails in most places. This is why most regions have closed their trails. They don’t want people to get in more trouble out there than they need to. The worst of the rain and warmth is through about midday tomorrow, Monday 12/30. Then as colder air moves in, rain changes back to snow over the Tug Hill and the Adirondacks in the afternoon and especially Monday Night. That will probably give a few inches. Given the timing of it being quick I am not 100% comfortable doing a snow map for that. At least yet. Tomorrow morning may be a different story.
RING IN THE NEW YEAR
The ball drops and we are dropping back closer to normal. Any rain showers on New Year’s Day change back to snow during the day, especially Wednesday Afternoon and Wednesday Night. We could easily see another few inches here too. Since this is Day 4 right now, nothing on the forecast just yet.
GETTING COLDER AFTER THAT
We continue with lake effect snow showers and squalls from late Wednesday, through Thursday 1/2 and into Friday morning 1/3. The could very well be additional accumulations in the areas hit by this. Again, since we are on Day 5 here, if not longer, no forecasts as of yet. However, I will tell you the chance for accumulations in order to start rebuilding a base are looking better and better by the day. Even if it doesn’t happen at this point in time, it will likely happen soon after that.
FIRST WEEKEND OF JANUARY AND BEYOND
Heading into Saturday 1/4 and into Sunday 1/5, most of the lake effect will fade away, with localized exceptions. Temperatures will be down to near to below normal, which at this time of the year, means 100% below freezing 24/7, even at the lower elevations. There was a storm that was set to move on through Saturday 1/4 into Sunday 1/5. Now it is looking more like a Sunday 1/5 PM/Evening into a Monday Afternoon 1/6 storm. This storm has been show on the models consistently for several days. I am thinking this storm has a medium to high chance of happening. This one has the potential of several inches of snow statewide. If trails are not able to open on 1/2 because of lack of snow, or for a few days afterwards, I am thinking by Monday 1/6 to Tuesday 1/7, most trails in the state should be able to open up. At least that is what I am seeing right now. Since this is less than 10 days and is approaching 7 days later this evening, my chances of this storm happening are going up. Stay tuned on this 1/5 to 1/6 snowstorm. This will be the first of many this month.
FIRST FULL WEEK OF JANUARY
We then transition to lake effect snow showers and squalls after this storm for the remainder of Monday 1/6 through Thursday 1/9. By Friday 1/10, most of the lake effect is done with. It just becomes dry and cold for the second weekend in January. By cold I mean cold for January standards. Well below freezing during the day. Near to below zero at night.
