After this weekend’s storm, we have a very quiet week ahead. It will be much closer to normal with the nights cold, but not as chilly as what you are seeing waking up across Upstate NY this morning. Single digits with a few spots BELOW ZERO this morning with the meager snow cover in the Adirondacks!
WHERE ARE WE NOW
The storm over the weekend was well advertised and for the most part well forecasted. Both the original forecast last Thursday and the update last Friday had some errors in it, as there will almost always be forecasting this large of a scale, but for the most part, it was a decent call. Here’s the actual amounts that fell and the snow that is left on the ground as of this morning
CAN I RIDE? ANYWHERE?
No. Period. End of story. The entire state even in the bowels of Moose River Plains, Tug Hill and Perkins Clearing, the first and last places you’d expect there to be snow in the entire state, were bare when this hit Saturday. Yes this is a decent “first snow”, and a good base building snow because of the sleet and freezing rain mixed in it, and additional water content, but this is not enough to ride, nor enough to provide sufficient lubrication for your sleds. If you are so so desperate to just take a quick spin, seasonal road on the Tug Hill or Adirondacks would be it, but don’t expect to go very far and expect every hazard in the book under that meager snow cover. So far as any riding goes, I’m calling it now. See you in 2022 🙁 again
WHAT’S NEXT
It’s good that we have the cold back and a starter base, but we are 4 weeks behind. Unfortunately over the next several days, no help. Overnight tonight into tomorrow morning the first cold front comes through. Nearly dry. Maybe a quick dusting to an inch up north but not enough for a snowfall map.
What about Wednesday PM into Thursday AM? Well, same deal here. Weakening as it approaches. A dusting? Maybe an inch at most. But nothing either worthy of a snow map, nor anything at this time to add to what little base we have.
HO HO NO!!!
Christmas Eve will find us, wishing for more snow yelling PLEASE! I’d like to ride for Christmas… if only in my dreams 🙁
Unfortunately this pattern shift we just went through runs out of gas on Christmas Eve. This is not the Christmas Eve Massacre of last year. But. Given the amount of snow we have this year compared to last year at this time, any system going north and west and anything with warmth will have about the same effect. We are now 5 days away. The storm track is set to the north and west with almost zero hope this thing majorly changes course. With that being the case expect milder temps with rainfall on Christmas Eve going into Christmas morning. As for a White Christmas, if you don’t have it now, you won’t have it then. Period. End of story. For all those whom have 1″ or more on the ground and are hoping for it to last to Christmas Day… CROSS YOUR FINGERS. Now in all fairness the cold front coming through Christmas Day will change rain back to some snow, so the effect of snow falling on Christmas Day may be indeed nice, but not much more than that.
AFTER THAT?
More trouble. It looks like this current pattern gets reset to the storms tracking north and west again with another storm approaching between Christmas and New Years with even more warmth and potential rain with it. All the talk about clubs not opening because of the longer hunting seasons in the southern zone… yep… that is basically a moot point now. And we may have to start all over again in 7-14 days. And then the days and weeks to follow. For any serious riding concerns, any serious miles, I’m saying first full week of January at the absolute earliest at this point. Dare I even say we may not open until MLK weekend? Yep. Certainly possible. And I am calling it right now. Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. Another very tough snowmobile season and another very tough year for winter weather lovers across Upstate NY. The first half of it anyway. The picture could be way different in 20-40-60 days. Or it could be the same. For now, all we can do is… WAIT FOR SNOW.
