If I wanted to crash winter, this is exactly what I would do. This weather pattern, especially next week, crashes winter. Period. The National Weather Service is putting a 90-100% at BOTH 6-10 days and 8-14 days for ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. 90 to 100% chance. Even when you know you’re going to get hit, it’s going to be a 70 to 80 to 90 percent chance, but 90-100? That’s the NWS way of saying FUGEDABOUDIT!!!
For those of you whom hate winter, but follow us anyway… enjoy your 40s, 50s and 60s next week and into the week after! Dare I say 70? Downstate and NYC maybe, Upstate that would be threatening all time record heat. Which if we were going to do it… Well… anyway I digress…
So what about ANY snow? Well, I’m glad you asked. We have some snow in the forecast today. It does look like after the lake effect overperformed Monday through yesterday (and didn’t wind down… but I know y’all are HAPPY when I miss like that), our weak system/clipper is coming through today and this evening. With snow. Dare I say, WHITE GOLD??? What was most depressing was looking at total snow model runs 10-16 days out, and seeing literally 1/4 to 1/2 of the snow TODAY.
Is it enough to ride on? Um, no. Lawn jockey? If you like mud, maybe. But this is, for the rest of 2021, what we’ve been reduced to. Celebrating a dusting to 2″ of snow across most of Upstate NY. Enjoy it snow lovers. Besides an odd event here or there, it will be Christmas if not New Years 2022 before we see anything SUBSTANTIAL.
Hey! With this really warm pattern in December, it is going to keep Lake Ontario and Lake Erie WARM. And Lake Erie ICE FREE into February, if it ices over at all this year. These lake temperatures are INSANE going into the middle of December. Near record highs. And not much to bring it down. 44 to 48 degree lakes! These temps won’t fall into the 30s until after New Years at this rate. Mercy…
So what about this blog going forward? This is UPSTATE SNOW. We forecast snow. We cheer for snow. We celebrate snow. We will continue to do so at any opportunity, regardless of whether or not we can ride on it. Because I know over the last decade out of the almost 15K people we have following us, not every single one is a snowmobile rider. Some never have. There is a dedicated but small part of this audience that discovered and use my site over the years to plan travel, and other winter recreational opportunities. I will not let you down. It may not be every day, but as often as needed, I will be here.
What about the Guide to Your Ride Podcast? We record our first episode today. It is sponsored by Water’s Edge Inn in Old Forge. Therefore it must run. Every week between now and the end of March. Since there is money involved, it must run. Even if there is NOTHING to talk about. We will be creative, because that’s what we do.
I’m just as frustrated as you all are. Praying for a repeat of last winter to where when winter does arrive it is EVERYWHERE… but I have the feeling we’ll be lucky to do that again. We shall see. Until then, please don’t lose faith in winter. After all, it’s still two weeks before it is officially WINTER! Long season to go. Remember that.
