Wow! We’re getting snow today! Well for most, maybe just enough to whiten the ground. Higher elevations north of the Mohawk Valley and north of the Thruway stand to see perhaps 2 or 3 quick inches. At most. This is about all we can get excited about at this point in time.
By tomorrow we are back to sunshine and temps again getting into 30s and even pushing past 40 in some areas of Upstate NY (Especially Capital Region) on Sunday, does it matter that much? Will it stay around? Probably not. It’s just the way this winter is going.
We have a much bigger problem than that Danno. A much bigger problem. Take a look at the snowfall map, for snowcover on the ground across Upstate NY. After all the lake effect dumped off Lake Erie to the hilltowns south of Buffalo last month, there is hardly ANYTHING to show for it. Off of the Tug Hill and into the Adirondacks, yes there is some snow on the ground. But NO WHERE NEAR ENOUGH TO LAUNCH THE SNOWMOBILE SEASON NEXT WEEK. ANYWHERE. Yes there is some skimming over of smaller lakes and ponds but the big lakes are still WIDE OPEN and in this pattern, will be for awhile. Want cold air? Want more snow? Let me expand out the view for you so you can see…
Not since 2015-16 have we seen it like this. Even last winter was better compared to this. 2018-19 two winters ago this was nowhere near the situation over the northeastern US and southeastern CANADA. This is getting ridiculous. But until we start getting snow on the ground across the border and to our north, until storms stop tracking north and west of Upstate NY to give us the snow we need and the COLD we need behind it to freeze things down… folks… we have A LONG WAYS TO GO.
OK so what about after Sunday? More of the same. Storm lifts well to the north and west of Upstate NY, here comes the warmth and the rain out ahead of it, 40s and 50s Monday followed by a strong cold front and lingering snow showers and lake effect snow behind this thing for Tuesday. If you want to add to snow totals for the season, just a number, this is fine. But this is NOT how you add to the snow on the ground and build a base for snowmobilers to ride on. It just isn’t the way man.
Ok so what about later in the week or towards next weekend? It does get colder behind this system, right? We do get a shot at more snow, right? Yeah maybe some on Friday. Do the next systems cut to our south and east and put us into the snow??? Nope. HUGE Gale in the 970s winding up and rolling through the Great Lakes again, spinning and winding up to our north and west next weekend. And BTW if you are a lover of winter weather, cold and snow, you will just about have a HEART ATTACK seeing the temps next weekend on here ahead of the next storm. 50s and 60s??? Even the big cities next weekend ahead of the next system have an outside shot at 70!?!?
I’ll end the torture here, with one final graphic. The one I shared yesterday which drew all kinds of ire. But as you see from the day to day on this series of weather maps and charts, it is what it is. The weather (for winter weather lovers) sucks. And it’s not going to get any better until we get close to Christmas. From now through December 17th, is essentially a LOST CAUSE. Yet again. Yet another very warm December. How many years have I been doing this and December has been a HUGE disappointment? Most of the last 10 years unfortunately 🙁
OK so I’m taking tomorrow morning off so no Morning Blog on Sunday. I’ll follow up Monday and as promised, will keep you up to date on the details of when winter is coming. It will come. Eventually. Even if later January into February. We will get something. In the meantime, be a blessing to those around you this weekend. Help people every day in every way regardless of what it is.
And while I know so many of you appreciate these educational and informative blogs, I’m not going to wish cast it. Not why I started this almost a decade ago.
