IF ONLY 🙁
How much SNOW would this be if it were just a few weeks later???
A major Nor’easter is clobbering much of Upstate NY, NJ and New England at this time and will for the next 24+ hours. The initial storm that rolled across the Great Plains to the Ohio Valley this weekend has jumped to the coast and is now undergoing “bombogenesis”. This is when the storm strengthens much faster that 1mb per hour. By tonight, this is going to be a 980 something to 970 something monster off the Northeast coast.
Because it is the end of October, and with no cold air in place, especially out ahead of this thing, it is a rain event. Not all lake effect is snow. Not all Nor’easter are snow. Sometimes there is a mix. Sometimes there is predominantly rain. And this is indeed one of those times.
After a few inches of RAIN through tomorrow, things will settle down for the rest of this week and into Halloween weekend. But this is where the tables turn. Another strong cold front will blast on through here on Halloween and into Monday November 1st, bringing yet again, the coldest air of the season. Unlike October, which is trending top 10 warmest (and I’ll go into the analogues of this next week with the initial winter weather outlook), November is starting off at to even BELOW NORMAL on temps. If you are looking for Indian Summer weather next week, you will not find it here.
CPC is going below normal for a wide swath of the nation, especially EAST of the Rockies and into the eastern 1/3 of the nation to be BELOW NORMAL going into November. While this is true on temperature, on precipitation it’s a different story. With a NW flow aloft, it does bring the colder air, but it also shuts off the Pacific, Gulf and Atlantic from contributing moisture. This is why big Nor’easters are NOT in the forecast at this time. Not with this weather pattern.
So, to recap, we got ripped off and just wasted a HUGE opportunity this week. Next week normal to below normal cold shows up to Upstate NY, which will give those whom have not frosted yet, well, frost! And it increases the chances of the first snowfalls across Upstate NY happening next week. Does not guarantee it, but the chances after November 1 go up SUBSTANTIALLY.
Stay dry, stay enthused, the best is still ahead of us here.
