Three full days after the biggest Nor’easter so late in the season, we still have as of this writing over 14K folks without power. That number was pushing 200K at its peak.
This has turned out to be one of the biggest power outages in the state since the Labor Day Storm of 1998 with 75-125 MPH winds crushing through the state along the Thruway corridor from Rochester and Syracuse, through Utica to Albany… and actually a lot farther than that. There may have been a few times folks have been out of power multiple days since 1998, but this sticks out to me as the measuring stick. A lot of that snow is melting away. In areas that got 10-18 inches of snow, it’s still around of course, big piles of GLOP, but in a few days, it will all be melted and gone! It will be in the 50s today and tomorrow but WARM 70s are on the way for Sunday! Then… a cold front comes through… and at least in the Northeast US… puts an end to the warmth… semi permanently 🙁
OK, it’s April 22nd! Why are you STILL ON WITH UPSTATE SNOW!? Well, because IT HAS NOT STOPPED SNOWING. We just came off a record late season snowstorm that knocked your power out for hours, to days, or maybe it’s still out! And I’m sounding the bells of the church right now. Winter is NOT done. THERE WILL BE AT LEAST ONE MORE SNOWFALL IN UPSTATE NY BETWEEN NOW AND MOTHERS DAY. At least one. Will it be as bad as what we just got hit with? GOD I HOPE NOT!!! But starting next week, in the last days of April, going into the first full week of May, you will not be tanning. You will not be planting. I would not get the shorts out just yet for the summer. I’d keep the jeans, jackets and yes, the snow brushes, handy. At least for one more time. The pattern is CLEAR with high confidence from CPC in the 6-10 and 8-14 day ranges. This warmup this weekend into early next week is it! After that, the NEVERENDING WAIT FOR REAL SPRING WEATHER TO COME starts… yet again… time period unknown for it to end…
So when is it going to snow again? Not sure! How much? Did you see how hard it was to predict the last one!? I had to update on the fly traveling through Virginia with HOURS TO GO before it hit Upstate NY. Predicting early and late season snows are like predicting snows at all here in the Carolinas… VERY DIFFICULT. Way more difficult than 2-4 on a clipper, 4-8 on a cutter, 8-16 on a Nor’easter in the heart of winter in Upstate NY. SO MANY MORE THINGS CAN GO WRONG. OR RIGHT. We just saw what happens when everything goes right with a late season snowstorm. Historically right. But for now, all I can promise is this: As I said when the snowmobile season ended in early March and I did my “sign off” on March 14th… I will be tracking. When the threat is there I’ll report it and track it down. Even to Mother’s Day. Even to Memorial Day Weekend (remember 2013? We were just 2-4 degrees off of an all time snowstorm that weekend, while Whiteface and the high peaks of the Adirondacks got buried in 1-2 FEET OF SNOW). However long it takes, I’m here. And just think of it this way… the longer I’m here, as annoying as it is, means a shorter to no offseason for me. September is going to come around REALLY FAST at this rate. And then the circle begins, you’ll all be excited instead of temperamental, as the circle of life in Upstate NY, Upstate Snow Country, continues…
