We are now into OVERTIME on the snow season, getting into the annoying, end of season crap, that makes you wish it would just stay spring instead of the back and forth mother nature will do for the next bunch of weeks. As I said over a week and a half ago, I’d continue to monitor and cover Upstate NY from the first flakes in October/November to the last flakes, whenever that it is (Mother’s Day!)… So here I am…
It will get progressively colder today and into tomorrow, but the real blast of cold air, the below freezing welcome back to winter air, hits starting Saturday night. With a cold and moist NW to WNW flow, Lake Erie wide open again thanks to the mild winter, and Lake Ontario ready to go, there will be wrap around snows, lake effect and upslope snows going on starting overnight Saturday into Sunday. Sunday looks to be the worst day of it, with activity gradually winding down on Monday. It will be breezy/blustery. It will be maddening and absolutely miserable. It’s amazing the impact of an October/November snow, compared to late March/April after the snowmobile season is done, everything is melted and all the gates are locked for the season.
Since this is stretching my 3 1/2 day forecast rule limit to the limit, it’s a first look. This is subject to change. Also keep in mind early/late season conditions, which means this will be more elevation based (the higher you are, the better chance of the higher numbers), mainly grassy surfaces, less of a chance this all sticks to pavement. Only in the higher elevations and in the Tug Hill/Adirondacks do I expect enough to stick to pavement to where shovels and/or snowblowers and/or plows would be needed. It’s not a big deal and this is actually somewhat typical of late March/early April weather.
Next Wednesday 3/30 I’m eyeing snow/sleet/frz rain changing to rain as the warmth building in the Central/Western US makes its run at the Northeast. The warmth will get here… Thursday 3/31 to Friday 4/1 look WARM before wind, cold and more possible snow returns next weekend 🙁
That’s the latest for now on the Upstate NY weather. Next week is expected to be a big launch for my weather company with a newly redesigned richlupia.com, new homeschool weather curriculum for elementary school kids being published, and yes I am working on merchandising for Upstate Snow… stickers, t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts and sweat shirts. It may technically be the “off season” for me now, but in this my 10th year, there is no off season. Not this year. Lots of cool stuff coming soon so don’t ignore our social media “ding” when it pops up!
