SNOW! We will have accumulations in the coming hours! Some areas by tonight could have several inches of snow, especially downwind of Lake Erie and especially Lake Ontario! Considering the terrible position we were in after the Thursday WIPEOUT for most of Upstate NY, this is the beginning of the rebuilding. If only for a day or two.
Strong clipper cold front is in WNY as of this writing (just past 7 AM 2/19) and will march across the state in the next 6-8 hours. EVERYONE will get a dusting to 2″, most of it within 60-90 minutes, from the initial cold front which will contain a potent snow squall. WATCH OUT IF TRAVELING IN THE COMING HOURS. This afternoon and evening, lake effect takes over and hits areas south of Buffalo while POUNDING the Tug Hill! Expect heavy snows in these lake effect bands, downwind of the lakes, expect several inches. It would not surprise me to see some spots on the Tug Hill walk away with DOUBLE DIGIT SNOW TOTALS! That’s out of here by 7 AM tomorrow morning. Enjoy it while it lasts. Sunday will be a decent day, probably the best out of the weekend, to ride on whatever falls. Wherever there is base. Remember there is still a TON of water out there, STAY OFF THE LAKES, watch out for hazards that simply were not present prior to Thursday. We’re back to late season conditions for awhile. Monday will be a milder day with temps flying above freezing again, in some areas by A LOT!
Tuesday our next system rolls through. It’s similar to Thursday because it tracks north and west of Upstate NY and it’s in the 40s and 50s out ahead of it, so any help from the snows today will be TEMPORARY. Heavy rains Tuesday PM into Wednesday AM will race across Upstate NY doing further damage. Wednesday the cold air returns, but at the moment, without the lake effect we are having today.
Late in the week there are signs of HOPE. A storm tracking more at Upstate NY than north and west. It starts as snow, goes to a mix, to rain briefly, then back to snow. If it tracks farther south in the next few days, it could be a rebuilding storm. Cross your fingers on that. Which leads me to the extended outlook. Last week we were crowing President’s week looked BAD. Indeed that has lived up to billing. But from the storm end of next week and BEYOND… HOPE! It looks like March, could bring us hope of colder temps, and more chances for snow to accumulate.
BOTTOM LINE – This weekend unless you are on Tug Hill, in the North Country (Like St Lawrence or Franklin Counties), you have little to nothing to ride on. The lake effect could provide a brief reprieve Sunday and possibly Monday. Tuesday looks terrible. No hope until the end of this week or until this next weekend. Your riding options will be extremely limited, even with today’s burst of snow, because so much base got wiped out and there is water water EVERYWHERE. Make the most of what you can over the next few days. It does look like in the 1-2 week window, help is on the way. Hoping by March we can get more square miles and more trails back open, freeze the lakes back down, and have an encore presentation of winter. I know it has not been a good winter. Yet again. But we will continue to run everything down until the very end. And give you every last chance to ride.
THANK YOU – Zack and I had such an awesome time on Tug Hill and on our “former” local trails last Sunday-Tuesday. 303 miles of absolute fun! So many folks stopped us, recognized us, saw us. It means so much to me that two years after moving to South Carolina, in one three day trip back, all the love and support we got from so many people! With this being the 10th year of Upstate Snow, and with this site continuing to grow every year measurably, this trip gives me pause. Even with shorter winters. Even with the sport having the issues it has right now. What is possible??? What is possible??? The dreams will go well into the off-season. To all those whom support Upstate Snow, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
