So while all the attention is on the heavy lake effect snow today… what about tomorrow? Wednesday? Later this week? Beyond? Well, here’s my best shot as of this morning.
BRUTAL COLD
Regardless of whether or not you have the lake snows at any point today, tonight or tomorrow morning, it’s freaking COLD! Tonight and Tomorrow morning, WIND CHILL ADVISORIES and WIND CHILL WARNINGS are in effect depending on your location. Windchills will be WELL BELOW ZERO, peaking as cold as -30 to -40 across the Adirondacks and Tug Hill tomorrow morning. It will not last forever. As high pressure shuts the lake effect down tomorrow, the sun will be out, the winds will die down, sunset Tuesday will be more tolerable than sunrise Tuesday. And another cold Tuesday Night/Wednesday morning.
WARMS UP QUICK
Wednesday and Thursday will see a return to normal temperatures. Even some lower elevation areas could hit or break the freezing point. Don’t worry, whatever snow has fallen will stay put. No big meltdowns anytime soon. But just know temps will be on the roller coaster ride.
WHAT ABOUT MORE SNOW
Well… we do have a clipper system late Wednesday and into Thursday that may drop a dusting to an inch or two. Probably not worthy of a snowfall map. But in this winter, snow falling period is an accomplishment and it will be praised as such. We’ll take ANYTHING.
END OF THIS WEEK
Another arctic cold front comes through, only this time, the wind shear is much stronger, low level moisture is lacking, no upstream connections, so I don’t foresee any big lake effect snow dumps at this time. Nothing close to what we are seeing today.
NEXT WEEK?
Pattern doesn’t change much. At the end of the day, after this big lake effect event, we are down to clippers and additional lake effect. With the NW flow keeping the at or below normal temps locked in here through MLK weekend and beyond, opportunities for heavier accumulations look to be few and far between. Then again, this big lake effect event we are seeing today did not come into focus until Thursday, 4 days out. Keep watching. I will be. Looking for any snow to open up more snowmobile trails.
WHAT ABOUT THAT 50 YEAR SNOWSTORM EVERYONE IS SHARING AND TALKING ABOUT THIS WEEKEND?
I’ve got one word for y’all: BULLSHIT. It ain’t happening. I don’t give a crap what obscure forecast site or loonie was posting crap up, it is just not going to happen. Will there be a Nor’easter? Yes! Will it be here? NO. Not even close. If this were Nova Scotia, I’d be talking, but not here in Upstate NY. Thanks for playing. We’ll just be cold with mixed clouds and sun with passing fits of light snow. Typical January.
HELP A FRIEND!
Shout out to Chris Schoff of Schoff Polaris in Rome, organizing the John Schoff Memorial Ride coming up this Saturday January 15th. You should be riding on decent conditions out there.
WHERE CAN I RIDE?
WAIT WAIT WAIT! PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RIDE UNTIL AT LEAST WEDNESDAY ON THIS STUFF! Why? Because the clubs need the chance to pan the trails down and get them groomed and ready. If you and your riding possie ride these trails like maniacs and BRAP your way through, a lot less folks behind you will be able to ride… because you blew all the snow off the trail. Don’t be a jerk. Two more days is all I’m asking here folks. Give the clubs a chance to work with what we’re getting. And decide what to open. Thank you clubs for all you do!
To become a MEMBER, drop me $10, and you’ll get name recognition, or if you wish not to use your name, recognition to your favorite snowmobile club or where you live. To become a SPONSOR, drop me $60 and I’ll put up a link to your business, Facebook page or snowmobile club!
