The heavy lake effect snows over Central New York will wind down this afternoon and evening.
Then we will finally catch a break! After 5 days of a generational lake effect snowfall event for several counties in Central NY and into Eastern NY (with some counties receiving as much lake effect snow in one shot since the 1990’s if not decades before), we finally will enter a point of REST. And we will actually see some sun tomorrow. It will be cold though.
And to the south, very close to our area but not quite, the next snowfall event moves on through tonight and Monday. While nothing will fall in Upstate NY from this event, Pennsylvania will see accumulating snows. Not much in the northern parts of the state (a few inches) but the southern half of the state is under winter storm warnings with 6-12 inches expected. It’s close enough to mention but not enough for a snowfall map.
We are looking at scattered snow showers and cold temperatures to continue for the middle of the week. It will remain cold with highs in the teens to low 20’s. Lows will generally be within 10 degrees of ZERO. This type of weather, lasting for several days, is excellent for grooming and packing down the trails where this snow cover is great.
What about areas where the snowfall is not so great? Unfortunately not much help in this next week besides the cold to freeze things down. While this won’t be everything needed to open up trails in some parts of the state, at least we will get things set to where when we get the next snow, we are golden and ready to go.
I will have a much greater analysis of the total snowfalls and where tomorrow morning. I will also go over which trail systems are open and which ones are closed as of 1/6. That will be our starting base for the season and we will add trails as we add snow over the month of January. And as temperatures remain below freezing day after day after day.
