Baby got back… TO NORMAL! It’s amazing how NORMAL January weather feels so out of place, almost like cruel and unusual punishment. But here we are. It’s COLD out there! And will be for the foreseeable future. Single digits and teens in January are considered NORMAL for Upstate NY, in case you forgot. Temps today will actually be a little BELOW NORMAL with highs running about 5-8 degrees below seasonal norms. Overnight lows tonight will be neat NORMAL. Tomorrow should be near NORMAL.
Wednesday sun fades behind increasing clouds and a weak clipper system approaches in the afternoon and evening. Some light snow will develop and continue through Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. Nothing to write home about. This will be a dusting to maybe an inch. 2 inches, especially downwind of a lake would be high side on this one.
All eyes continue to be trained on our “cutter” system coming out of the Ohio Valley Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. This is the next chance for accumulating snows in Upstate NY. For many, this could be significant (over 6″) which also, for many, could be the first time this year we see that! Notice how the low pressure as is scoots south and east of Upstate NY, actually BOMBS OUT off the shores of NJ and Long Island. If that happens, expect bands of HEAVY SNOW, particularly from the Poconos to the Catskills, Capital Region, and into the Hudson Valley. Of all areas of the state to be shafted this winter, these areas have been shafted the most. This cutter Thursday night through Friday, these areas could get the most snow out of everyone. We are still 96-108 hours out on this, but I think it is a fair assumption to say that, at the moment, these areas are lining up for at least a 6″ snowfall. Possibly more. Still a lot of time and details to work out. But I am liking what I am seeing at the moment.
The trends this weekend into next week continue to point towards normal temperatures with normal chances of snowfall. There are other systems coming after the Thursday Night/Friday cutter. But lets not put the cart before the horse. Just yet. We have the cold! Now we just need SNOW! Then after that, MORE SNOW. Then we might be able to start something next week and into MLK weekend we’ve been waiting for weeks to say… It’s SNOWMOBILE SEASON. Fingers crossed. Snow dances dancing. Excitement building. Just please mother nature, don’t let us down again? Pretty please???
