On behalf of Zachary, Rich, and Upstate Snow, we wanted to take a moment as this is our last regularly scheduled update for the 2024-25 season. THANK YOU to all those whom made this season what it was: THE BEST SEASON IN A DECADE! Not since 2014-15 have we had a season like this.
Now I know 2018-19, particularly in the Adirondacks, there was riding into April. There was even riding a few days in April LAST YEAR despite how warm it was. There could still be a few days of that. But last year we did our last daily post on February 25, about two weeks before this. It is still earlier than expected, but when you have blowtorch conditions about to mull over Upstate NY, it is time to cue the fat lady. She will be singing. Shortly.
GAME OVER
With the exception of N Cayuga, Oswego, S Jefferson, Lewis, N Oneida, Herkimer, Hamilton, St Lawrence, Franklin and Essex Counties, the rest of Upstate NY is in GAME OVER mode. Not expected to return the rest of the season. The rest of the areas that still have snow cover to work with: It will be getting thinner by the day. Less to ride on. Not good!
SHORT TERM – WARM
High pressure and sunshine build in today, tonight and tomorrow. 45-55 today. 30’s tonight. 55-65 tomorrow. That ought to get the snow melt going quickly! Then Tuesday Night, through Wednesday Night, we get a back door cold front.
FLY IN THE OINTMENT
This has been noted for several days and if anything, is looking stronger. Temperatures will drop 30-40 degrees or more between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. During the day on Wednesday, it won’t get much above freezing north of the Thruway. South will be better but actually it will be much closer to a normal day. For one day. Wednesday night and into Thursday morning there will be not just rain showers but snow showers around. Not for long though…
BLOW. TORCH.
After this the full on blow torch effect hits big time! 50 or so on Thursday. Then Friday and through the weekend we are looking at temperatures at least in the 50s everywhere. In the lower elevations, 3 straight days of 60 or better cannot be ruled out. All we can say is OH MAN!
FLOODING
It’s not a matter of if there will be flooding but when. Based upon the weather patterns and the melting of the snow, we are predicting from this weekend the 15th through the last week of March (23rd-29th) will be the best time for floods to happen. The best chance is between the 15th and 20th. The Mohawk River, West and East Canada, Fish Creek, the Moose and the Black River all have chances of breaking their Top 5 flood records. Expect major road closures in these areas not now but coming up soon. Look especially for these by this weekend and next week.

This season had all kinds of ups and downs. While we got through this season better, we know for a fact the numbers were significantly lower. We think we know why. After all of these years, we will hit it up big starting in September. Everything. It’s just 6 months away. And the hope for the 2025-26 snowmobile season.
