The freezing air is about to come roaring back. This should put an end to this warmup and melting period. For now. This weekend is actually looking good in areas that still have tons of snow to ride on. And there are more than enough places with more than enough snow. For now. Looking ahead to the middle of next week and beyond: We are looking at a large womanly figure warming up her voice…
The warm storm has come. The warm storm is nearly gone. The cold and snow will return with minor additional accumulations. These will mainly be in areas that already have a lot of snow to deal with at this time.
GAME OVER
For pretty much all of Western NY, Genesee Valley, Finger Lakes, Southern Tier and most areas south of the Thruway, even extending east of Syracuse into the Catskills. And in addition the Capital Region from central Saratoga and Washington Counties and points south, as finally the St Lawrence Valley… I must utter these two words: GAME OVER!
Unless we get something big here later in March, it will get too warm and too late to reopen trails, especially with our average temperatures climbing through the 40s most days this month, reaching 50 by the end of the month in the lower elevations. Unless you have a defined below normal weather pattern in March, the season goes out from you. FAST!
SHORT TERM – SOME GOOD
As I had mentioned there is some good in the forecast for the next 24-36 hours. Through tomorrow evening the winds will be blowing again. Later today winds will be reaching 35 to 50 MPH. Snow showers develop this afternoon and become more organized tonight and tomorrow morning. We are looking at at least a few inches. Downwind of Lake Ontario, especially in the lake effect bands, 4-8 inches is not out of the question here.
CHILLY WEEKEND
Highs on Saturday will struggle just to get to freezing. On Sunday we will add a few degrees to this but will not turn on the heaters full blast. Just yet. That part of the forecast is set aside for next week. So if you can hear me: NOW HEAR THIS! IN AREAS WHERE WE CAN STILL RIDE, THIS WEEKEND WILL DEFINITELY BE THE LAST BEST WEEKEND OF THE 2024-25 SNOWMOBILE SEASON! It has been a long season. It has been a memorable season. Many guys have put tons of mileage on their sleds. But it can’t stop next week
FAT LADY WARMING UP?
This is NOT what we want to see in March. Not in a month with significant increases in daylight, sun angle, and atmospheric heating. But unfortunately, it is what it is. Starting the middle of next week and looking beyond into the middle two weeks of March, it is looking WARM here in Upstate NY. This means it will take several days to get rid of that near record lake effect snow pack, but it will go down. Considerably. Flooding will become very likely in the middle to the end of March as this 8 to 16 inches of water comes roaring out of the snow pack. Just pray not all at once here.
