Snow, sleet and freezing rain will change to rain this afternoon, then change back to snow tonight. Brutally cold tomorrow and early Sunday before the next round of above freezing air arrives.
Here is the updated snowfall map. Most of this falls this afternoon and tonight. Temperatures will fall from the 30s in the higher elevations and near 40 in the lower elevations, down to between 5 to 15 above by Saturday morning. Then not getting out of the teens on Saturday. Saturday Night and into Sunday Morning watch out! BELOW ZERO IS BACK!
During the day on Sunday, it moderates quickly as clouds increase quickly. Later in the afternoon and especially by the evening, snow showers are moving back in across Upstate NY. I will have an accumulation map for that tomorrow, but I would not put much into that because…
Monday is supposed to reach the 40s! Again! Snow showers change to rain showers with this next surge of warm air flowing on in. By Monday Night and into Tuesday Morning, we are changing back to snow with temperatures falling back into the teens to lower 20s again.
Wednesday another storm system approaches. This starts as snow, then transitions to sleet and freezing rain, then over to rain by Wednesday Night and into Thursday. On Thursday, daytime highs are once again back into the 40s again.
The 8-14 day has temperatures stuck in a sandwich here in Upstate NY. To the west it is squarely below normal. To the south, it is squarely above normal. Here we are stuck in the middle. With normal temperatures in the 20s in the higher elevations to near freezing in the lower elevations, this means the winter weather should continue. We may have a day or two in the 40s to melt and compact some of the snow. We may have a few days in the teens and 20s to help rebuild some of the snowpack. The base is as good as it has been since the late 2010s! This forecast should continue to help it!
February starts tomorrow. Once we pass President’s Day on 2/17, we will officially be in the “back 9” of winter. But February and March has usually some of the best conditions for snowmobiling. Especially the month of February and into early March before the sun gets high and the snow melts more quickly.
