Hey there! Happy New Year! Well maybe I am a little early. It is continuing way above freezing. Most of the snow if not all of the snow is GONE across Upstate NY. Even in the higher elevations and places that normally hold on to it the most. But this is not another year of defeat. 2024 will go down as a bad year for snowmobiling. 2025 however will be a completely different story. And that story starts hours after the ball drops and we ring in 2025.
Snow develops across Western NY in the late morning and afternoon. Across Central NY that rain to snow change happens in the afternoon and into the evening. By Wednesday Night, most if not all of NY is back into snow. Temperatures fall below freezing. And that is where they will stay. Not for days. But for weeks. More on that later.
The heavy lake effect snow is coming on down Thursday Morning. This is particularly across Central NY. During the day on Thursday, and especially Thursday Night into Friday Morning, this area of lake effect snow becomes more localized and not as widespread as at the start Wednesday Night and Thursday Morning. The map shows how much snow is expected through Friday Morning at 7 AM
Continued snow showers with localized lake effect squalls will continue on and off through Friday. Through Saturday. Through Sunday. As high temperatures drop into the teens and low 20s, and lows drop into the single digits over the weekend, this is absolutely what we need to start rebuilding our base. Will it be perfect? No. Not right away. But…
Early next week, Monday 1/6 and Tuesday 1/7, a general winter snow across Upstate NY is looking likely. It has been on the maps for several days on nearly every model run. Confidence something will come through early next week is running higher than normal. After this, a second storm middle to end of next week is in the cards as well. With all of this snow and cold hitting Upstate NY with nothing above freezing showing up anytime soon, conditions on the trails should be improving day by day with more mileage on the trails opening up as we get every day deeper into January.
This map is unbelievable. Seriously it is. Not so much Upstate NY. We are definitely below normal but not as bad as areas to the south and west of Upstate NY. The Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. Mid Atlantic. The Southeast. Here, it will be brutal. It is the coldest time of the year. And with it being 100% below normal, we are looking at snow in the south, for the first time in years, in some cases over a decade. Temperatures hitting levels by mid-January that we just should not talk about. Again, it will be below normal for Upstate NY, but to the South and West of Upstate NY, it could be historically cold.
