Wow! Was that a nice band of lake effect snow yesterday? Orchard Park (home of the Buffalo Bills) has been a frequent bullseye as of late with another 30″ in 24 hours recorded there! Too bad they are playing in Detroit this weekend 🙁
With the lake effect subsiding to snow showers over Lake Erie this morning, the band of heavy lake effect snow has shifted from 250 to 260 to 270 and is now more like 280. This is putting it close to the Mohawk Valley but still just north. This is where Oswego, northern Oneida and central Herkimer Counties get the worst of the snow. In these areas, several additional inches may fall. These were accounted for on the forecast graphic sent out yesterday morning. By this evening, the winds will subside as a 1040+ high pressure (strong for any time of year, even winter), comes crashing into Upstate NY. This means clearing skies and a very cold night.
This means SNOWDEO today and tomorrow should go off well. The best that it has since 2018. At least I am hoping that it does. It is one of the biggest weekends in Old Forge all year.
Most of this weekend is sweet with sunshine, below normal temperatures, and that gigantic strong high overhead. Once it starts moving away later Sunday, that is when the tables turn.
MORE RAIN AND WARMTH NEXT WEEK
More rain showers develop heading into Monday and especially Tuesday. That day will be the warmest day with temperatures way into the 40s with lower elevation locations cracking 50. That is not good if you want a decreasing snow pack to stick around. Especially a snow pack that is mostly lake effect.
COLDER WEATHER COMING LONG TERM?
The 8-14 day now is showing NEAR NORMAL temperatures for the days leading up to and during Christmas. This is not an automatic SNOW thing. It just means that chances of getting snow and keeping snow are higher than if it were not like this. We still are beyond 7 days (we are at 12 until Christmas currently) so we still have several days to watch before we start to get too excited about the long term… only to end up deflated in the end. We don’t want that. At all!
