Good morning Upstate Snow Nation! Winter has returned! For now…
With the winds generally being in a 250 to 270 direction over the next 36 to 48 hours (between 6 AM today 12/12 and 11 PM tomorrow night 12/13), and with snowfall rates coming down heavily, at 1-3 inches per hour under the heaviest bands of lake effect snow, this is the areas that we feel will get the most snow. We have extended the snows farther to the east than usually due to the strong winds of 20-40+ MPH taking the snow farther than it normally goes. Once again, into western New England, they will see several inches of accumulation in the Green Mountains of Vermont, more than 100 miles from Lake Ontario! And also from Lake Erie, snows from there are carrying all the way into Central NY, into the Syracuse and Utica/Rome areas. While stuff like this happens a few times per winter, it doesn’t happen often!
SNOWDEO
Snowdeo is saved! At least somewhat. Even if the heaviest snows stay off to the north of Inlet and Old Forge, and these areas that you see in the 6-18 inch range end up on the lower end of it, here’s the deal: THERE IS ACTUALLY SNOW TO RIDE ON FOR SNOWDEO THIS YEAR! We are not 100% on bare ground. Brown ground? Potentially. It all depends on where the heavier bands of snow go in the next 24-36 hours.
THIS WEEKEND
SUNSHINE RETURNS! For the first time in a while, we will actually see sunshine thanks to a 1040 high pressure that will basically come overhead by Saturday. This means Saturday the 14th turns out to be a sunny yet chilly day with temperatures below freezing during the day, and well below freezing at night (single digits and teens). For at least this weekend, and in particular for Snowdeo weekend, it is about the best possible forecast we can come up with.
NEXT WEEK
Oh no, here we go again! The 40s return with some locations hitting 50 degrees. Although this time, nowhere near as much rain so the snow pack that is left standing in Northern NY should hopefully survive at least another few days before getting busted on down to dirt again. As for Western NY… again… we are sorry. Trails closed until January 2nd here. Hopefully by then you will have some snow to play with. Hopefully.
Have a great day! Enjoy the snow and enjoy SNOWDEO!
