Before I start I wanted to say THANK YOU for all the love shown to Upstate Snow this past weekend, especially my video from Saturday Night. It was our plan to be there and to ride Tug Hill today and the Adirondacks tomorrow. Zack’s illness kept us from making the trip. He’s doing better and will be back to work this week. If you missed the video, which knowing Facebook you likely did, click this link.
Otherwise it’s going to be a mostly quiet week of weather ahead. There are some things to talk about, and some things could have some minor impacts, but until Super Bowl Weekend, don’t count on it. Once we get to Super Bowl Weekend, it’s heads up time. There could be something coming.
This afternoon and tonight a developing storm off the coast will rocket its way from the Carolinas to New England. This may spread some brief light snows for the Hudson Valley, Capital Region and Champlain Valleys, with little to no accumulation. Outside of some extra clouds in eastern NY, you would not know anything was passing by.
A more organized clipper will drop its way across Upstate NY Wednesday night into Thursday. Organized enough it could produce a dusting to and inch or two of snow. Also organized enough, with some colder air and some organization behind it, there could be a brief opportunity for some lake effect snows Thursday. Don’t make a big deal about it but put a note for now by Thursday.
The weekend is where things start to get interesting. On Friday, a very strong clipper flies across the Great Lakes and approaches the Northeast Friday Night into Saturday Morning. This has the potential to bring a rain/snow mix at first, then potentially a few inches of snow. There are indications with much colder air and aligned flow in back of it, Saturday during the day, especially afternoon and evening could be a better lake effect chance than the more muted Thursday event. Gotta keep our eyes on Super Bowl Weekend. Because what this clipper does, will have a direct impact on what a southern stream system does, coming out of the Gulf of Mexico and the Southeast US. The Euro takes this thing, especially Sunday, rockets it up the coast and bombs this sucker out into a Bonafede Nor’easter. The GFS says “eh” and flies it off the coast because the GFS doesn’t see southern systems well, especially at that 5-7 day range. So this weekend plays right into the model biases. The bottom line is this: Something is probably coming. Could be decent. Looks at this point to be more of a New England/Downstate hit that Upstate NY, similar to the gargantuan Nor’easter that slammed New England 10 days ago.
Otherwise, enjoy this weeks quiet weather! Expect high 20s to 30s during the days, teens at night. It will not be bitterly cold like this weekend until at least next weekend. With the freeze/thaw cycles getting more pronounced this week, especially Wednesday when lower elevations will push to at or above 40, expect some changes on the trails and some slow beatdown of conditions on heavily traveled trails. There will be settling and compaction of the snow. The bases continue to build. Plenty of ice on the lakes. It looks like we finally hit mid-season conditions, a few weeks later than usual, but we are here, especially north of the Thruway. Snowfall amounts are still below normal for the season. We’re making the most of every inch we’ve got. Just praying “The Safari’s” don’t show up with their 60s guitar tune anytime soon…
