Lake effect snows gave a blessing to areas just south of Buffalo and Watertown overnight, with some areas exceeding the 7″ max I had called for. Seeing Lake Ontario and Lake Erie perform is a good thing! It has not happened very often this winter. Expect the snow showers and lake effect to drift south with an additional dusting to 2″ for a good part of Upstate this afternoon and this evening. In consistent bands, maybe just a touch more? It all clears out after dark tonight as winds shift, shear increases and the lakes shut off. Enjoy the additional snow!
Next clipper system rolls into WNY Monday afternoon spreading snow, getting to CNY, Tug Hill and Adirondacks by Monday night. Most of this snowfall will hit Monday night but some will linger into Tuesday. Not a lot of lake effect snow is indicated in back of this clipper because shear is high and the air is relatively dry. That should limit additional snowfalls downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario to just a few additional inches at most. Also the hills south and east of Syracuse into the Southern Tier and Catskills, based on the clipper track, I see the possibility of at least 2″ with some areas up to 4″ in this scenario.
Behind the clipper BONE CHILLING COLD returns! Oh boy. I know the cold is great and all, really helps out the trails, but I can understand if you all are starting to get weary from below zero nights and not getting much above zero during the day. I get it. But unfortunately these intrusions of bitter cold, which seemed impossible to get one month ago, now seem impossible to shake. For a few days, midweek, it will be, uh, ICE ICE BABY!
Thursday night into Friday another weak clipper and arctic cold front come on down. This will be another dusting to an inch or two scenario from this far out, nothing to get excited about. Later Friday and into next weekend, there is something I’m watching. The GFS pictured below shows it more than the Euro, but there continues to show a Nor’easter developing. Assuming the GFS has a clue, it looks too far south and east to impact us, hitting mainly Boston and central/eastern New England. I’m not going to throw away a Nor’easter possibility just because it’s the GFS showing it. All I’m saying is… I’m watching it. IF, and it is a BIG IF, it comes farther west, it would be more of a Capital Region, Catskills and areas east of the ‘Cuse that may get something. Eyes on it but nothing more at day 6-7… Next week more clippers, more light snow with some lake effect chances. The beat goes on…
Thank you for checking out The Morning Blog! We are finalizing in the coming days our return to Upstate NY to ride. Like many of you whom follow this site, you don’t live where the snow is. My commute is a lot farther than yours. Zack and I plan to document the journey fully. Look or more details about this later in the week. It’s coming…
