BRRRRR! After the snowstorm, the cold air built back in, and in a hurry! This will lead to much better grooming conditions for snowmobile clubs trying to open up across the state. For skiers, snowshoers, and other outdoor enthusiasts like ice fishermen, you are in your glory right now. The cold and snow the last few weeks has led to shanties on the lakes, and all kinds of trails opening up across Upstate NY. THIS is what we’ve been waiting for. Winter is long enough in this state, and to be able to GET OUT AND ENJOY IT in the ways we choose to, whether by snowmobile (the majority of this audience), by ice fishing, snowshoeing, skiing, or otherwise, my hope and prayer this morning is that you enjoy the site and content. If you like it, please consider supporting our operations. Details on that at the end of this blog.
Back to the here and now, today will be a partly sunny and cold day with most folks stuck in the teens today, dropping quickly to near zero after sunset, but it will not stay there. Clouds increase quickly tonight as our next clipper system comes racing from Michigan across southern Ontario with widespread light snows. These develop overnight and into Wednesday morning, especially north of the Thruway. There will be a break late morning/early afternoon with the snow, there will be breaks of sun, and where there are, a brief warmup. Especially south of the Thruway, those that see any sun tomorrow, will have a chance to break freezing. Tomorrow will be the warmest day in the foreseeable future, before the arctic cold front blasts in Wednesday evening with a brief burst of snow. This is the type of situation where snow squall warnings may be issued by the NWS. I could see a quick 1-2 inches, falling in an hour or two, going from fine to whoa to fine again. After that the lake snows take over into Thursday morning, then diminish as shear increases, air dries out and it gets damn cold again.
Thursday and Friday will be really cold days again, among the best for snowmobile riding so far this season. Cold is locked in, swamps are frozen down, and it’s time to fly across them and enjoy the beauty of the trails we have been blessed with. Just bundle up, ride right, ride safe, let folks know where you are going, and have emergency stuff with you. You just never know. With temps holding in the -10 to +10 range a lot of Thursday and Friday, it’s best not to take any chances.
The weather pattern remains COLD going into next week so expect conditions to stay the same if not improve across the state. With conditions improving and more clubs opening up statewide, this means A LOT LESS PRESSURE on Tug Hill and the Adirondacks. There’s still going to be a lot of traffic there for sure, but a lot of trail systems that don’t get much traffic in WNY, CNY and eastern NY that can open up, will afford the adventurer awesome views, fresh groomed trails and an unforgettable experience. Check with some of the clubs that you don’t check in with much, see if they are open and how they are doing. If you can ride them, ride them.
Later today, enjoy my Trail Talk Podcast with the king of Adirondack snowmobiling, Darrin Harr, from ilsnow.com! He just took his first ride on his new machine yesterday! You can read about his experience, and get to know more about how he’s been the king of snowmobiling in the central Adirondacks for so long! If you don’t catch the video, look for the link on our website, Transistor, Spotify and Apple Podcasts!
