Good evening!
Our lake effect event is coming to an end right on schedule. As is always the case with LES, we had some winners and some losers, but at this juncture, we’ll take what we can get. A quick glance through some of the higher numbers reported to NWS include 13.5″ at Cattaraugus, 16.5 inches 3 miles north of Celoron (Chautauqua County), 15.3″ near Jamestown, 10″ near Osceola, 16.6″ 8 miles north of Redfield, 11″ in Auburn, and 12.8″ near Elbridge (Onondaga Co).
Tonight’s snow map is based primarily off of radar loops and high-res modeling. Not much additional snow is expected… generally 2 inches or less in the highlighted areas, with scattered snow showers leaving a trace just about everywhere else.
Ok that’s done, so what’s next? Cold temperatures. Wind Chill Advisories are up for most of the North Country tonight — wind chills to 25 below zero, with actual air temps between zero and 10 below. Single digits can be expected over the Susquehanna region, and lower teens across the Fingerlakes and WNY. High temps tomorrow will range from zero to 5 above over the North Country, to the teens for much of CNY, to around 20 for western NY.
As for “weather,” some clouds and scattered snow showers will affect the state tomorrow but nothing to get excited about. An area of low pressure will scoot off the Carolina coast over the weekend, but that’s now nearly certain to be a miss for the Upstate. Instead an area of high pressure will strengthen over the Great Lakes and New England, keeping us dry… but cold. Highs both Saturday and Sunday will be similar to Friday… perhaps about 5-8 degrees milder (still solidly below freezing).
The cold pattern continues into next week, although moderating a bit as we go into the Tuesday-Wednesday timeframe (highs in the 30s). At that point the next item up for bids will appear… a clipper diving southward through Quebec and Ontario, which would bring some light snows across the northern half of the state Tuesday into Wednesday.
All-in-all a fairly cold and quiet regime will be established over the next several days across the Upstate.
