Good evening…
Just a quick update for tonight. Some freezing rain is occurring over portions of the ADKs this evening. Northern Herkimer, Hamilton, Saratoga, Warren, etc. A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted, but glaze amounts should be very light, and whatever does accumulate will quickly melt away by daybreak Friday.
A Wind Advisory has been posted for portions of the ADKs, as well as the eastern Catskills. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible, which could result in downed trees and limbs. This is especially so in areas that channel winds in the higher terrain. Can’t rule out some power outages as well.
Outside of that… it’s going to rain. A lot. Amounts generally around an inch for the Fingerlakes and northern ADKs, 1 to 1.5 inches for the vast majority everywhere else, with 2+ totals far southeast. These are NWS rain totals, and after looking at model data, there’s no reason to hate on what they posted, so we’ll throw them a bone tonight.
All of this… headed our way.
The big picture hasn’t changed. As the storm system moves to our north, and a secondary little low zips into New England, colder air will wrap in on the back side late Friday night. A slow transition to snow showers can be expected by Saturday morning, with snow showers throughout the day. Initially accumulations will be hard to come by given a warm, wet ground, but an inch or so of wet snow looks probable on Saturday. Temps look to get cold in a hurry Saturday night, with lows in the upper single digits to teens in the ADKs, with mid 20s for most of the Southern Tier; mid to upper 20s along the Thruway and the lake plains.
Gonna go ahead and jump on the bandwagon for a clipper system which may bring some light snow during the day on Christmas Eve. Lake effect snows then appear to set up with a very nice wind orientation over Lake Ontario… if all sets up the way the models say they will, look for a White Christmas on the Tug.
Have a good night, thanks for your support!
